Ghostlight to Release Double Disc of Reefer Madness; Joe’s Pub Concert Planned

By Adam Hetrick
29 Sep 2008

A two-disc release of Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney’s musical Reefer Madness, featuring the original Los Angeles cast recording and the subsequent TV musical soundtrack, will hit stores Oct. 28.

The 1936 propaganda film of the same name, created to depict the dangers marijuana use, reached cult status with its camp appeal and outlandish scenarios. Composer Kevin Murphy and lyricist Dan Studney adapted the property into the stage musical that debuted in Los Angeles, played an Off-Broadway run and was later adapted into Showtime musical film.

In addition to a live recording of the original Los Angeles cast, the Ghostlight Records collector’s set will offer listeners the original Showtime soundtrack that boasts performances by Christian Campbell, Kristen Bell, Alan Cumming, Steven Weber, Amy Spanger, Ana Gasteyer, Neve Campbell, John Kassir and Robert Torti.

The anniversary release features new liner notes from the creators of Reefer Madness, as well as a booklet with artwork and lyrics for both CD’s.

Joe’s Pub will host a concert to celebrate the release of the double album on Oct. 27 at 11:30 PM. Set to appear are Christian Campbell, Cumming, Gasteyer, Weber, Spanger, Kassir and Torti.

The musical’s creator stated, “This double CD of Reefer Madness marks the culmination of a ten year journey for us. It began in 1997, during a road trip back from San Francisco, where we got the idea that it might be fun to write a musical about singing, dancing potheads. Being in San Francisco can give you ideas like that.”

Where? Who?

September 18, 2008 at 3:59 pm (blogging)

And I thought Sarah Palin saying she’s seen Russia as knowing about other countries was pretty dumb. This was from Joe.My.God’s posts today:

Hilarious or terrifying?

Yesterday John McCain was interviewed on the Florida affiliate of Spanish radio network Union Radio. And in the interview McCain appeared not to know who the Prime Minister of Spain was and assumed he was some anti-American leftist leader from South America.

After the interviewer presses him a couple times on the point and tries to focus him on the fact that Prime Minister Zapatero isn’t from Mexico and isn’t a drug lord either McCain comes back at her saying, “All I can tell you is that I have a clear record of working with leaders in the Hemisphere that are friends with us and standing up to those who are not. And that’s judged on the basis of the importance of our relationship with Latin America and the entire region.”

Then there’s a moment of awkward pause before she says. “But what about Europe? I’m talking about the President of Spain.”

McCain: “What about me, what?

Interviewer: “Are you willing to meet with him if you’re elected president?”

McCain: “I am wiling to meet with any leader who is dedicated to the same principles and philosophy that we are for humans rights, democracy and freedom. And I will stand up to those who do not.”

At this point, the interviewer gets tongue-tied presumably because she can’t get over McCain not knowing what Spain is.

Some are defending McCain, saying he was deliberately slighting Spain for pulling out of Iraq in 2004, something Dubya remains angry about. McCain’s comments are predictably causing an uproar in Spain.

Oh Freddled Gruntbugly

September 17, 2008 at 12:19 pm (books)

Taken from Slashdot today:

“Eoin Colfer, the Irish author of a number of books (including the popular children’s book series ‘Artemis Fowl’), has been directly approached by Douglas Adam’s widow, Jane Belson, to write a sixth book to continue the (even more) increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy trilogy.”

Part of me wonders if another writer could actually write another HHGTTG novel like Dougls Adams (the closest I’ve found is Terry Pratchett), and another part of me wonders HOW a sequel can be written when Mr. Adams killed off all the Earthly characters (Arthur Dent and Trillian) at the end of the 5th novel. I was always upset at Adams for ending the series how he did. Maybe there’s redemption after death?

This could be very interesting.
